Agility

Dalmatians may be best known for their success on the agility field. Their speed and agility make them the perfect fit for this fast paced sport of navigating an obstacle course.

Barn Hunt

Their keen sense of smell and strong prey drive mean Dalmatians often excel at barn hunt. The aim of the game is to find rats hidden throughout a course of hay bales. The rats are safely ensconced in dog-proof tubes.

Lure Coursing

Dalmatians LOVE to run, so it is no surprise that they enjoy coursing sports: chasing a lure either on a straight run (FAST CAT or Sprinter) or around a course (Coursing Ability).

Obedience

Dalmatians have an unfair reputation for being “stubborn”. Far from it, they are very clever and eager to work. They excel at obedience where they work as a team with their owner.

Rally Obedience

A fun twist on obedience, Rally obedience is a course of stations consisting of obedience skills. The fact that each course is unique (rather than obedience that is nearly the same each run) is appealing to the clever Dalmatian. In 2019 a Dalmatian was the #2 dog in rally amongst all breeds in Canada.

Dock Diving

While some Dalmatians will do anything to avoid water, many love swimming and combine their athleticism with their love of water to be phenomenal dock divers.

Weight Pull

The powerful Dalmatian has the tenacity to excel at sports that require grit and determination. Weight pull requires a dog to pull a cart (or sled) of weight 16 feet within 60 seconds.

Tracking

A keen sense of smell and an eagerness to work make the Dalmatian an excellent tracking partner, following a person’s path through a field and locating articles left behind.

Flyball

Many Dalmatians LOVE a ball and their speed makes them an asset to a flyball team as they race head-to-head towards the box at the end of 4 jumps to retrieve their ball and race back.

Scent Work

Most dogs have a keen sense of smell, and Dalmatians are no different. They can easily be taught to identify odours and compete, finding traces of scentin large courses with many distractions.

With the right balance of courage, calm, and drive, a well-bred Dalmatian, with a stable temperament, can excel in protection sports.

Herding

Clever and tenacious, a Dalmatian can be taught to compete in some unexpected sports, like herding, which requires safely moving animals from one spot to the next, neither backing down nor being aggressive in their approach.

Mushing

The Dalmatian’s natural endurance makes them a perfect fit for mushing sports. Happy to run in summer heat or on winter snow, they will go for miles.

In another unexpected sport, several Dalmatians hunt with their owners. Their willingness to learn and a naturally soft mouth make them ideal partners.
